On a molecular level there is evidence to suggest that massage therapy has an anti-inflammatory effect, so researchers at the University of Toronto are looking into this. As I understand it researchers are looking at inflammatory markers measured in the blood after a massage as well as stress hormones adrenalin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine to see what effect massage has on those signaling molecules.
